Foundation

The Solapur Social Foundation was founded by Shri Subhash “Bapu” Deshmukh. This is the culmination of several years of observation of the District of Solapur and its abject neglect.

Brief History
Solapur was once upon a time known as a city of skilled workers. The city's textile mills and beedi industry attracted migrants from Maharashtra's rural area, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Those were heady days when the Solapur economy was flying high.

However, the good days did not continue for long. The closure of the mainstay textile mills and auxiliary industries, due to the Liberalization policy of The Government in the 1980s, spelled doom for 30,000 industrial workers. With no other alternative industry created to absorb the displaced workers, jobs were lost, mills were closing down and the economy plummeted. Desperate for income to meet the basic necessities of life, many of the workers were pushed into unsecured and informal work such as domestic helps, waiters and sadly, even rag-pickers.

The 150-year-old beedi industry employs around 70,000 home-based women workers. It is under threat from imported mini-cigarettes and The Anti-Tobacco Law 2004, which prohibits the advertising of cigarettes and beedis and their consumption in public places. The large corporate manufacturers could circumvent the ban on tobacco promotion by using surrogate advertising. The resulting decrease in demand for beedis adversely affected the employment in this sector. The beedi rollers - its potential workers - were hit hard and most of them are currently unemployed.

On another level in the field of agriculture Solapur district is drought plagued. Farming technology had not been updated. Farmers were having a tough time cultivating their crops. Money to develop their produce or even till the land was not easy. Money raised came with high interest rates. Any loan taken for whatever purposes was made possible by mortgaging lands owned. Slowly but surely, the farmers were forced to seek other jobs and other sources of livelihoods. Some couldn't take the hardship and the financial drain - they committed suicide.

The Lack of industry and therefore jobs in Solapur coupled with the plight of the workers with potential and the Farmer Dilemma created a mass exodus from Solapur. By the mid-eighties, anyone with a fair skill, talent or education, migrated away from Solapur to the bigger cities like Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik and even further away to places like Nagpur and Amravati seeking jobs, fundamental wellness and basic life security.

This brain drain had a serious impact on the economy of Solapur. The chances of any worthwhile industry being established in Solapur deteriorated. The lack of local manpower was dissuading. One reason after another Solapur became poor, almost as if her spirit had left and all that was left was an empty shell. In hindsight, it can be observed that this massive Capital Intellectual bleed caused the virtual Economic Death of Solapur.

The Champion for Solapur
Bapu has been championing Solapur at every opportunity. He realized that he alone could achieve a little. The situation was bleak. Deep down, within him was the urge to contribute substantially for Solapur. In order to reverse the brain drain, something must be done at the ground level in Solapur. Thus went out that call from Bapu, inviting anyone who wishes to contribute to the welfare of Solapur, under one umbrella organization. That sterling invitation was responded by Solapur natives of myriad backgrounds such as government employees, businessmen, professionals, teachers, etc.who left Solapur ages ago. They came to meet the man who pleaded for the cause of a Better Solapur. He said to them that you could belong to any political party, any philosophy, any religion, and caste or creed - but remember your roots. Never Forget Solapur. That was a motivating for each of these Solapurkars (Anyone who has roots in Solapur District, Maharashtra or still has roots there) to awaken. To contribute of their thoughts, their efforts to better Solapur, almost in a solemn pledge.

The clarion call was simple, “Come to Solapur. Be drawn back to your home district, your village and see what you can contribute to make it better. ”

Suddenly there was an ocean of support from various quarters. Ideas were generated. People came together. Volunteers. Donors. Philanthropists. People who wanted to contribute their knowledge. Thus was born the Solapur Social Foundation which was created with an intent to unify all of this “Redeem Solapur” energy under one entity.

The Birth of The Solapur Social Foundation
Very soon almost 1000 people got together under the aegis of the Solapur Social Foundation.
The energy was building up. What seemed to be just an idea was now blossoming into a full fledged action agenda. Someone suggested that in a metropolitan city like Pune Solapur must be showcased. Thus was born the Solapur Fest in Pune which brought together various small and medium producers from multiple domains like Farm produce, textile products, chutney and pappad manufacturers. One hundred stalls of these and 20 stalls of live food from the district of Solapur was showcased in the heart of the city at Pandit Farms, Kothrud, Pune. Spread over three data urbanites brushed shoulders with rural producers and took home a variety of Solapur products and absolutely delicious food.

It was a grand showcase of a small vision.
This was the dawn of The Solapur Social Foundation.
Today the Solapur Social Foundation works in different domains like Rainwater harvesting and conservation, Tree Plantation, Digital Schools.
This project - The Annapurna Yojana in Pune is one such.

Why the Annapoorna Yojana

The AnnapoornaYojana began in Solapur city as the plea of one woman who had no one to provide her with even one square meal a day. When the woman met Solapur based businessman and social worker Shri Subhash Deshmukh, he told her from tomorrow you will get a dubba delivered at your home.

Slowly, a team was put up and now there are about 500 dubbas that are prepared by a team and then delivered to the doorsteps of those who are unable to cook a meal for themselves, the very poor and some who are bedridden.

This initiative was started in Solapur City and is going on well there.
Here in Pune, a discussion was started about the City’s Smart City Stature and Mr. Deshmukh said that the Smart City checklist must include a Hunger Free City or BhookhMukth City. What’s the point in having fabulous infrastructure, connectivity of air, road, rail and internet if there is going to be a population that’s going to starve?
This was a wonderful thought and he cited the Chief Minister’s opinion that Government alone cannot create a BhookhMukth City.

That gave us the idea that if we could bring together a group of people and start a movement where we spread this notion then area by area we could spread this and ensure that one city in the country is truly BhookhMukth City.
A small team came together and we found a small place in Hadapsar where we could put together a kitchen. That was on the 30th of June 2019 and within 30 days we not only had an office but we also had crossed 100 dubbas. Now we are looking for a larger kitchen.

Vision

The Vision of Annapoorna is to bring together volunteers, donors, well wishers on one single platform. This is a compassionate Vision that plans to get rid of the city of Hunger.

Objectives of Annapoorna

The Vision foresees a place in every area of the city where food is available once then twice a day for everyone who is hungry. Especially we want to ensure that those who are invalid, bedridden, such destitutes are fed a nutritious meal at least once a day for free of cost.

It is completely crowd funded and right now the focus is to try and increase the inflow of funds, materials and even give us a heads up regarding hungry people that they know of in their areas.

Do you want to help?
People can volunteer their time, they can be donors and could donate cash or in kind, and they could sponsor dubbas in their areas.
You can volunteer your time, as donors - Annapoorna Yojana needs cash and kind. Or you could sponsor dabba’s in your area. For details please feel free to contact us.

We are very Thankful

To our donors and well wishers who gave us their unstinting support. The Support was Financial, Emotional and above all was the Immense Trust and Faith that was placed upon us by a small group of people who decided to give us their support to make this Dream of A Bhookh Mukth (Hunger Free City) a reality.

Inspiration

Subhash "Bapu" Deshmukh is an amazing story of grit and determination in the face of huge odds.

Shri. Subhash(Bapu) Deshmukh

Starting life very humbly Bapu dropped out of school to earn a living in the tiny village of Wadala, outside of Solapur City, Maharashtra.

He took small menial jobs in the first few years of his life. He worked in a poultry factory, a sugar cane factory and in other such jobs at the very bottom of the pyramid. Although Bapu began life humbly, he was not afraid to dream. He tried his hand at being an entrepreneur very early. He tried dairy farming with a couple of cows, then tried his hand at starting a kirana or provision store, then a tyre store and finally he began to take small contracts in construction.

That was his turning point and he never looked back after that. That dream took him from his rural dwellings to the nearest city – Solapur. The size of his contracts increased and very soon he was known as a Contractor.

From there he expanded his footprint into rural banking knowing the pangs of a rural borrower that he himself was at some point in time. This venture too started very small and today has branched into three distinctive financial organizations set up under his stewardship.

A seed of a Dream that was sown in a small village outside Solapur brought him out of that village and he was on the road to create a bigger than dreamt entity. He began small. Today his business philosophy is rooted in the belief that everything born in this universe was first small. Whether it’s the Blue Whale or whether it’s the largest sequoia tree or whether the richest person in this world – it all began small. Time Flies, they say. In Bapu’s case, he flew with Time. The small town boy had arrived.

Thus was born the Lokmangal Group of Companies with Bapu as its Founder Chairman. Today, more than two and a half decades later the Group is diversified into sugar refining, ethanol, dairy, banking, education, entrepreneur development, garments, biotech, farmer development, fertilizer etc.

The group has blended a lot of ‘Not for Profit Organizations’ that are created as a ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’(CSR),wing of the ‘For Profit Organizations’ of the group.

Subhash Deshmukh never forgot his humble roots. In fact he embraced it and was soon a champion for the poor and the plethora of social causes in and around Solapur, Maharashtra. It was therefore not surprising that in a very short time he was known for his championing the needs of the poor and doing what he could to alleviate those needs. He is known for the large social impacting programs that his companies execute out of the profits they generate. In fact he began practising Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR much before the word got to be as Fashionable as it is today. A classic example is the Mass Marriage which is now conducted every year since 2004. It has been lauded as an example of how CSR Projects must be managed and executed for its efficiency, planning and roll out.

Identifying, the pulse of the people is necessary to address social issues. Expensive marriages in rural areas are a major cause of debt, which often causes a landowner to become a poor farm worker. Bapu started an innovative initiative to address this problem – mass wedding programs that are offered for all religions. This enables farmers to live a life of social respect without mortgaging their land to meet the cost of the marriage. These debts to finance marriages cost often become killer debt burdens. Unable to bear the crushing interest and principal payments these borrowers often resort to suicides. Recognizing this,Bapu actively supports the mass marriage initiative and till date more than 2500 couples have been brought today in holy matrimony under the aegis of this organization.

Just this one project is now is a bi-annual project spread over two geographical locations and is elaborate day long event where hundreds of thousands of people congregate in an almost festive atmosphere. Last year 100,000 people had lunch at Solapur, Maharashtra where the event was held and almost 7,000 volunteers took part in the event to ensure that it went off hassle free.

Bapu is widely known in Maharashtra not only for the businesses he created. He believes that Government(s) alone cannot achieve anything sustainable and meaningful unless enterprises big and small, businessmen and enterprises come together. If they do not, our farmers and the poor in our rural spaces of our country will remain poor. Due to lip service, social upliftment programs will be rolled out one after another. Government and Politicians must partner with Business houses and their employees in order to administer social Life Transforming programs. Without such a partnership in place, efficacy is questionable.

Bapu’s ability to churn out Leaders is immense. Not a single one of these businesses is personally supervised by him. That speak about the volumes of the man and his abilities. Today the vision that causes him sleepless nights is not business expansion, it is the desire to create entrepreneurs and to build the leadership bank for India’s Socio-Political development. He believes that B-schools are sprouting across this nation of ours spewing similar graduates with similar ideas. Almost like a factory line producing similar products. Businessmen are caught up with creating more businesses because growth is the mantra, stop growing and you’re dead.

At a recent speech he delivered, Bapu said, “Leaders are not being developed. Businessmen, Entrepreneurs are not being mentored. Enterprises are not being incubated fast enough. If not now, when? If new companies and ideas are not incubated now when will they become mutli million Rupee enterprises? The challenges for small businessmen are immense. Banks talk about financing SME’s but the challenges refuse to go away. Venture Capitalists dont venture into the rural spaces as much as they show an appetite for risk in the urban jungles of this country. The ratio gap between Employment and Entrepreneurs is not encouraging in comparison with the US, China and Brazil or even Japan.Unless that trend changes quickly, we are going to be faced with a huge problem, unemployability is already the next big problem not unemployment.”

“We need to develop Entrepreneurs,” he exhorted a group of students who were graduating from his Lokmangal Group’s Colleges. “We need to teach people how to create wealth. The GaribiHatao slogans are dead. This is not the time for sloganeering. This is the time for action. The gap between the rural and urban population of this country is growing by the minute; simply because there is not enough effort to market the farmer’s produce to take it to National or Global consumer. The kind of waste that is being created in Agriculture is simply not ignorable. The bulk of tomato produced is wasted in every rural farm because there is not a sustainable and feasible way to store it.”

This further stems from his belief that unless there is active public participation in social upliftment programs, our country will become a tragic case of how we the people of a country turned a blind eye to the suffering of our rural brethren. Therefore instead of being an armchair critic like most of us tend to be, Bapu decided to act. Today the number of programs that are executed speak volumes about the man and his vision. These are social, cultural, sport and even literary projects.

A professor of a reputed Management Institute noted: I have seen the project management capability of these projects and as someone who has worked in and on professionally managed projects of scale, credibility and status impacting nature, Bapu’s projects are flawless.

Mind you, most of these projects are not managed by B-School grads, they are all managed by people who simply call themselves, “Bapu’s People”.

Subhash Deshmukh is there to inspire, motivate and train you to become your Dream.

Become a Guardian

This is a Thought. A Philosophy. That if a city is classified as a smart city we should also be a Hunger Free City. We should care for our fellow citizens. Period. Unless we care and unless we cultivate an ecosystem of caring, the disparity between us will grow. We cannot be called a smart society - let alone a smart city - unless we have Caring embellished in our psyches. Government alone cannot create this ecosystem, Citizens must participate and when we do, there will be a possibility that within the shortest of time spans we have created a sustainable duplicable social model. Our city must be a role model for Caring and Sharing and that is why we have invited People to Donate to the Annapurna Yojana - to demonstrate their caring.

Bhookh Mukth City

Today there are approximately 100 smart cities designated in India.
The Nomenclature of a Smart City is that - “an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop 100 cities across the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable” (Source - Wikipedia)

If indeed a city is to be termed smart shouldn’t it be hunger free? Should there be a city which has all the amenities that a smart city has and therefore be hunger free? Or aren’t these hungry citizens not the responsibility of the state or that of its other not hungry citizens?

This is the thought that generated the Annapurna Yojana in Pune. A philosophy that every citizen has a right to food. This is a basic must. This should be guaranteed. If this cannot be guaranteed by the State then it must be taken upon as a ‘must do’ initiative by the citizens of the State.

That is what this initiative aims to do;bringing together like-minded citizens, philanthropists and all those who believe that every human being regardless of his or her standing in society, has a right to at least one decent meal a day.

This cannot be achieved by one person. This philosophy has to spread across a whole city so that it is now embraced and accepted. One kitchen in existence cannot liberate a city of hunger. Many kitchens must spring forth from this philosophy so that now an entire city is covered.

Currently this project is covering the Pune district of Hadapsar and from here it envisages to launch across Pune.

Unless a city is Hunger Free, it cannot be called a Smart City. Slowly, but surely, this clarion call will be heard by everyone and this philosophy of ‘a hunger free city’ will be a model that other smart cities can adopt.

If this becomes a reality, then India as a nation can be called the ‘Only Hunger Free Nation’ in the whole world and that indeed will be a proud reflection of our national ethos, our culture, our caring nature and our belief in the basics of human needs to be delivered.

Of course, something like this does not become a reality overnight. There will be a metamorphosis of this thought. If nurtured well, if taken seriously then only the philosophy that every citizen is guaranteed at least one meal a day will come to pass.

How are we so sure? We are emboldened by the result of what one man’s vision can achieve if nurtured properly. With the right people. With the right will.

In 1915, a 5’ 4”,45 Kg man called Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi landed in Mumbai from South Africa. He had no money to fight the British Raj. He had no followers. He had no arms. No army. No mobile telephony that we take for granted today. No social media, nothing. He was possessed with a single vision of Swatantra Bharat or Independent India. From there till 1947 – a never give up attitude of that vision, a never compromising stand of that vision and an Intent that was so powerful that it ensured what was started as the British East India company in the 1600’s and which had mushroomed into the British Raj by the time Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi arrived in India, would cease to exist. An almost 300 year + vision to subjugate the Indian populace and divert all the wealth of this once a mighty land – came to a halt because one man dared to dream. An Independent India was born out of sheer Intent. Driven by one powerless man that then British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill called the Half Naked Indian Fakir.

This Bhookh Mukth City philosophy is The Dream. One man thought that it should be made possible. That man is Subhash Deshmukh. A little more than four months ago it was just a discussion. On the 30th of June 2019, it was launched at Hadapsar as a Concept and incubated at Hadapsar as a model. A small team of dedicated and passionate citizens got together to make this a reality and within the shortest time frame, a small team, a kitchen, a distribution channel and partners have fallen in place. That is the Power of Intent. As our Founder, Shri Subash Deshmukh often tells us – Have Integrity of Purpose, the rest will follow – it was our intent and our integrity of purpose which has brought this small team together and it is this belief in our power of our Intent that we are optimistic about taking this Dream, this philosophy to the next level.
